The Sydney Roosters are gearing up for their quest to claim the premiership in 2026, and they have a surprising asset that might just give them the edge – and it doesn't involve any players from their squad.

The Roosters' captain, James Tedesco, has disclosed that the newly appointed addition to their coaching team, Michael Cheika, former coach of the Wallabies, will significantly impact the team's performance.
Cheika, who serves as a coaching expert and specifically focuses on forwards under head coach Trent Robinson, brings a treasure trove of knowledge and experience from his tenure at high-level rugby. Beyond his time with the Wallabies, he has also led Argentina's national rugby union team and managed the Lebanon rugby league side.
Tedesco emphasized that Cheika has quickly begun to make his mark on the talented roster. "He’s overseeing the defensive strategies with the middle forwards, as well as their offensive and defensive play," Tedesco shared during an interview with SEN.
"Cheika has immense international coaching experience across various teams, and I believe his presence will serve as a source of motivation for us. While he’s still familiarizing himself with the finer points of rugby league, his intensity and the way he communicates with us, particularly in tackling and wrestling techniques, have been truly outstanding. I genuinely believe we will start to see the positive effects of his input quite soon."
Furthermore, Tedesco discussed the significant impact of the Roosters' new dynamic recruits, Reece Robson and Daly Cherry-Evans, on the team's structure. He stated, "They’re going to be incredible additions. The most valuable aspect they bring is their leadership. Cherry has been an established captain and leader for quite some time now, while Reece, as a hooker, is involved in every tackle and must maintain control throughout the game.
Their effective communication and leadership abilities have been a major highlight and a real benefit for me personally."
But here's where it gets controversial: Will the influence of a coach from a different sport translate effectively into the NRL? Can Cheika’s experience genuinely reshape the Roosters’ strategy, or will it lead to unexpected challenges? What do you think? Is there potential in this cross-sport collaboration, or do traditionalists argue that it may complicate the team dynamics? Share your thoughts in the comments!
